Loma Prieta Volunteer Fire and Rescue: August 2009

A large amount of drift smoke is in evidence throughout the county. Back fires have been set at the Lockheed fire as part of the containment effort.

Look for a distinct smoke column or flames to distinguish between drift smoke and a wildland fire.

If you are still unsure if its just drift smoke please call 911.

Relaxing after the call

Call Fire Captain Candace Lefler and her crew (not pictured), Loma Prieta Captain Mike Coryell and Loma Prieta Firefighters Steve Jankowski and Lance Lougee (Photographer) enjoy a bite after a run on Highway 17, the fourth call of the morning. Loma Prietra Fire has been "hard" staffing its station and Jamison Creek Cal Fire Station (near Boulder Creek) since shortly after the Lockheed fire broke out. Cal Fire crews were called away to battle the 7000 acre fire in steep and rugged terrain. During situations such as this it is normal procedure for Volunteer crews to set aside their personal lives and staff stations and respond to calls for days on end.

It should be noted that the Loma Prieta Company staffing Jamison Creek Station had to prepare their own lunch that day.

Large Wildland Fire between Empire Grade and Swanton Road

A wildland fire estimated to be approximately 1000 acres is burning in a westerly direction at this time. Evacuations have been ordered. Please see the Sentinel article for the roads affected. Avoid these areas so as not to interfere with evacuations and suppression efforts.

A Cal Fire engine from Burrell was sent as part of the first alarm. Loma Prieta Volunteers are "hard staffing" the station while Burrell remains uncovered.

Loma Prieta and other units were dispatched to a "wires down" call at 21:44 in the Upper Zayante area. Equipment responding was unable to locate any fire.
